The Sound of Music stages 100th show

The Sound of Music stages 100th show
It feels just like yesterday when the grand curtains of the Newport Performing Arts Theater (NPAT) unveiled the great performances from a family of singers. It must be true that when things are running great, time travels fast and it was not until last week when we realized that the Trapp family has been singing songs on the hills, in their mansion, and during the Kaltzberg Festival for one hundred times.
The cast of Resorts World Manila’s (RWM) production of the Sound of Music (SOM) were beaming with smiles after their 2 pm performance last Sunday, March 11. The crowd gave them another round of standing ovation but louder this time as the cast just concluded their 100th show. RWM President Kingson Sian went to the stage and handed the cast their 100 cake to the delight of the crowd.

von Trapp happily display their 100th show cake. Right: Audie and Joanna are joined by
Pinky Marquez (Mother Abbess) and Marvin Ong (Rolf)

This milestone officially made this staging of the Sound of Music the longest running Filipino production of a Broadway musical. The 100th show is not even the finale yet. Already on its third extension, we will still be hearing more of “Do Re Mi”, “Few of My Favorite Things”, “Edelweiss” and “So Long, Farewell” for two months more as the play’s run is extended until May 27, 2012.

Part of the audience during SOM’s 100th show were the 100 winners of the Twitter contest. On the eve of the 100th show, Resorts World Manila’s official Twitter account (rwmanila) posted five trivia questions about the Sound of Music with the 50 followers who tweeted back their correct answers winning 2 tickets. One of the winners, John Eric Musni, tweeted: “Sound of Music was a blast! Superb singing and acting! Great visual effects and props! Way to go!

THE CAST

Be enchanted by the world’s beloved musical as Resorts World Manila presents The Sound of Music at the Newport Performing Arts Theater; featuring a powerhouse cast of theater veterans and most promising newcomers guaranteed to beguile you in this timeless tale of love.
Based on a book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, a musical by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, The Sound of Music showcases the story of Maria Rainer, a young postulant appointed as governess over the seven children of widower Captain Georg von Trapp. Maria takes on the role of a mother to her charges, teaches them the art of music and singing, and captivates the heart of the once cold and stern captain.

The Sound of Music Cast:

Joanna Ampil as Maria Rainer
London’s West End actress Joanna Ampil will lead the roster of characters to play the vibrant and impressionable postulant, Maria Rainer, who will change the lives of the Trapp Family Singers. Having made countless international appearances in film and television, including Miss Saigon, Hair, and Les Miserables, Joanna’s performance as the new Maria is certainly something to look forward to.

Playing as Joanna Ampil's alternate is Cris Villonco. Fresh from her portrayal as Maria Clara of Noli Me Tangere, we will witness her talent as she transforms from being the shy Maria Clara to the free-spirited Maria Rainer.

Audie Gemora as Captain Georg von Trapp

He will grace the stage as the unaffectionate widower and father of seven children, eventually falling in love with Maria.

Another Captain Von Trapp to wow us onstage is Broadway actor and World Champion of Performing Arts 2006 Jon Joven. And as the newest addition to The Sound of Music cast, award-winning actor and recording artist Ariel Rivera will sweep the audience off their feet with his vocal prowess and remarkable acting skills.

Tanya Manalang as Liesl von Trapp
Tanya Manalang brings life into the character of Liesl, alternated by Mikaela Bradshaw. While going through the challenges of first love, witness the eldest daughter of Captain von Trapp as she performs her own version of Sixteen Going on Seventeen

Paolo Ocampo as Friedrich von Trapp
Playing as the fourteen-year old quiet son of the captain is Paolo Ocampo. Also alternating for the role as Friedrich von Trapp is Luis Nieto.

Rebecca Coates as Louisa von Trapp
Rebecca Coates  and alternate Rachel Coates will be portraying the role of Louisa von Trapp, the thirteen-year old daughter who often plays tricks on Maria and pretends to be her other sisters

Anton Posadas as Kurt von Trapp
Kurt von Trapp is the eleven-year old outspoken son who always questions Maria. Giving justice to the role will be Anton Posadas, with alternates Ruiz Sison and Justin Sian.

Annika Allado as Brigitta von Trapp
Sharing the role with Janina Punzalan as the sharp-witted Brigitta von Trapp is Annika Allado. Witness this smart little girl as she influences the blossoming love between Captain Von Trapp and Maria.

Alida Moberg as Marta von Trapp
The role of Marta will be portrayed by Alida Moberg, with alternates Thea Zamesa and Shanti Gleason. Marta is the sixth and very shy von Trapp child who will be the first to like Maria
